lonthetaskathand,signsfunctionpreciselybystandingoutexplicitlytorevealor‘show’(zeigen)something.Inthisway,‘Inourconcernfuldealings,equipmentforshowing[Zeig-zeug]getsusedinaspecial[vorzu¨glich]way’(SZ79).Signsareequipment,butwhereasequipmenttypicallyrecedesintothebackground,signsfunctionbybeingconspicuous.ThesigndoesnotjustŽtneatlyintoaninterlockingnexusofequipment;itorganizesoursenseofthesituationasawhole:Thiscircumspectiveoverviewdoesnotgraspwhatisavailable;whatitachievesisratheranorientationinourenvironment....Signsofthekindwehavedescribedletwhatisavailablebeencountered;moreprecisely,theyletsomecontextofitbecomeaccessibleinsuchawaythatourconcernfuldealingstakeonanorientationandholditsecure.(Ibid.)MorespeciŽcally,asignis‘apieceofequipmentthatexplicitlyraisesatotalityofequipmentintocircumspection,sothattogetherwithittheworldlycharacteroftheavailableannouncesitself’.(SZ80)Asignissomethingonticallyavailablethat,asthisdeŽniteequipment,alsofunctionsassomethingindicativeoftheontologicalstructureofavailability,ofreferentialtotalities,andofworldliness.Thereinliesthespecialstatusofthisavailablethingwithintheenvironmentofcircumspectiveconcern.(SZ82)Signsareequipment,then,buttheyhaveaspecial,privilegedstatusinvirtueoftheircapacitytoshedlightnotjustonsalientaspectsofpracticalsituations,butonontologicalstructures,too.Signsbringotherequipment,practicalsituations,andevenontologicalphenomenaintoviewexplicitly.Onecouldsay,then,thatsignsplayakindoftranscendentalroleinuncoveringtheunderlyingontologicalconditionsforourencounterwiththingsintheenvironment.Perhapswecouldtieourshoesandbrushourteeth,butwecouldneverdophenomenology,norevennegotiateacrowdedintersection,withoutthehelpofsigns.Sofar,sogood.ButLafontinterpretsthetranscendentalstatusofsignsinafarmoreradicalway.Onheraccount,shoelacesandtoothbrushesthemselvescouldneverevenshowupforusasintelligibleequipmentintheabsenceofsigns,sincesignsarethemselvesresponsibleforconstitutingcontextsofequipmentintheŽrstplace.LafontsaysthatHeideggertreatssigns‘asaparadigmaticcase’ofequipment,which‘leadshimtofeeljustiŽedingeneralizingtheresultsoftheanalysis’tohisaccountofthepragmaticinterconnectednessoftheequipmentalcontextatlarge,whichhesaysconsistsinakindofteleological‘reference’(Verweisung)(p.31).2ButHeideggerclearlyregardssignsanexceptionalcase,notexemplaryorgeneralizable.Lafontalsomaintainsthat,forHeidegger,‘theunderstandingofareferentialtotality,likeeveryunderstanding,mustbeclariŽedonthebasisofthestructureofthesign’(pp.31–32);thatHeideggermakes‘useofthe208TaylorCarmansign-structureforexplainingtheconstitutionoftheworld’(p.37);that‘thesystemofsigns-relations...constitutestheworld’(p.43n40).ButthisisjusttheoppositeofwhatHeideggersays.WhathesaysisthatthestructureofthesignmustbeclariŽedonthebasisofthefunctioningofequipment,notviceversa,sinceasignjustisapieceofequipment,albeitofaveryspecialkind.Asheputsthepointinhislecturesof1925,‘theonticshowing[ofsigns]isgroundedinthestructureofreference’.Thereferenceofsigns,however,‘isnottheshowing,ratherthelatteristhattowhichthereferencerefers’.So,‘Justasahammerisforhammering,sothesignisforshowing,butthisreferenceofserviceabilityinthestructureoftheenvironmentalthinghammerdoesnotmakethehammerasign.’3Thatis,thepracticalreferringofahammer,thewayitŽtsintoanequipmentalcontextasawhole,liesnotjustinthehammeringofthehammer,notjustinitscontactwithahandatoneendandanailattheother,butinamultitudeofequipmentalinterconnections,forinstance,itsplaceonthewallorinthetoolbox.Sotoo,thereferringofasignliesinthewayitŽtsintoapracticeasawhole,notjustinitsshowingsomething,say,apathinawood,oranapproachingstorm.Hammersarehammersandsignsaresignsonlybyreferringintheequipmentalsense,buthammeringandshowingdonotexhausttheequipmentalreferenceofhammersandsigns.Tryingtoaccountfortheavailabilityofequipmentatlargeintermsoftheshowingofsigns,Heideggerseemstobesaying,wouldbeliketryingtoaccountforitintermsofhammeringorgluingorpainting.OnLafont’saccount,bycontrast,signsarenotbasedonbutratherformthebasisofequipmentalreferenceasawhole.Insupportofthismuchstrongertranscendentalreading,shetwicequotesHeidegger’sremarknearthebeginningof§17that‘being-a-sign-forcanitselfbeformalizedintoauniversalkindofrelation,sothatthesign-structureitselfprovidesanontologicalcluefor“characterizing”allentitiesingeneral’(SZ77)(cf.pp.32,33).Sheseemstotakethiscommentatfacevalue,asifHeideggerwereendorsingthenotionthatanyandeveryentitycanberegardedasasign,orasbeinguncoveredonlyinvirtueofsigns.Butinfacttheremarkmeansjusttheopposite.Concerning‘signs’,Heideggerwrites,‘Manythingsarenamedbythisword:notonlydifferentkindsofsigns,butbeing-a-sign-forcanitselfbeformalizedintoauniversalkindofrelation,sothatthesign-structureitselfprovidesanontologicalcluefor“characterizing”allentitiesingeneral’(SZ77).ThepointisthatindoingphenomenologywemustfocusonsomeconcretelyspeciŽedphenomenon,since,looselyspeaking,anythingandeverythingcanbecalleda‘sign’.Ifwearenotcareful,weareliabletomissthephenomenaaltogetherandŽndourselvestalkingabouteverythingandnothing.ThatthisisHeidegger’spointbecomesobviousifwecomparethepassageinBeingandTimewithitstextualprecursorinthe1925lectures,whichisworthquotingatlength:WasHeideggeraLinguisticIdealist?209[T]heuniversalscopeofphenomenasuchassignsandsymbolseasilygivesrisetousingthemasaclueforinterpretingthetotalityofentities,theworldasawhole.NolessaŽgurethanLeibnizsoughtinhischaracteristicauniversalisasystematizationofthetotalityofentitiesintermsofanorientationtothephenomenonofthesign.RecentlySpengler,followingtheprocedureofLamprecht,haselaboratedtheideaofthesymbolforthephilosophyofhistoryandmetaphysicsingeneral,withoutofferinganyproperlyscientiŽcclariŽcationoftherangeofphenomenatherebyindicated.Finally,inhiswork,ThePhilosophyofSymbolicForms,Cassirerhastriedtoexplainthevariousdomainsoflife–language,knowledge,religion,myth–inafundamentalwayasphenomenaoftheexpressionofspirit.HehaslikewisesoughttobroadenthecritiqueofreasonprovidedbyKantintoacritiqueofculture.Here,too,thephenomenonofexpression,ofsymbolinthewidestsense,istakenasaclueforexplaininghenceforthallphenomenaofspiritandofentitiesingeneral.Theuniversalapplicabilityofsuchformalcluesas‘gestalt’,‘sign’,‘symbol’inthiswayeasilyobscurestheprimordialityornonprimordialityoftheinterpretationtherebyachieved.Whatmightbeanappropriateapproachforaestheticphenomenacanleadtopreciselytheoppositeofanelucidationorinterpretationinthecaseofotherphenomena....Itisobviousthatinterpretiveeffortsofthekinddescribed,takingupthecluesofsuchuniversalphenomena,ofwhichanythingandeverythingcanbemade–forultimatelyanythingandeverythingcanbeinterpretedasasign–poseagreatdangerforthedevelopmentofthehumansciences.(PGZ,pp.276–8,emphasisadded)Farfromrepresentinghisownview,then,suchappealstogeneralnotionssuchastheconceptofasignorasymbolbywayofexplainingintelligibilityatlargeareplainlyanathematoHeidegger.Ifthepeculiaritiesofsignsseemtoofferasinglekeywithwhichtounlockthesecretontologicalconstitutionofentitiesingeneral,weareindangerofignoringthephenomena–the‘thingsthemselves’–infavorofaprefabricatedinterpretiveschema,preciselythesortofhermeneuticalcravingforgeneralityandneatnessthatHeideggerisalwaysatpainstoresistandcondemn.Lafont,itseemstome,hasmisreadthetextandsuccumbedtotemptationininsistingthat,forHeideggerhimself,‘theworldas“awholeofsigniŽcance”is...ofasymbolicnature’(48).Atonepointsheeventreatstheterms‘ontological’and‘symbolical’assynonymous(p.18n11).Itisnoaccident,Ithink,thatHeideggerneversaysanythinglikethisinBeingandTime.TheconfusioniscompoundedbythecloselinkLafontforgesbetweentwotermsthatfunctionquiteseparatelyinHeidegger’saccount,namely‘sign’(Zeichen)and‘signify’(be-deuten).4TheafŽliationemergestacitlyinsection1.2.2,andthenexplicitatthebeginningof1.3:Withhisanalysisofsigns,Heideggerfocusesonandexplainsaparticularkindofreference,namely‘signifying’.Oncethishasbeendone,hebelievesthathisinterpretationofthesignasanexemplarycaseofequipmentjustiŽeshiminidentifyingthetwoinacertainway.Thereferenceofthesign(andhenceits‘signifying’)isheldtobeofthesamekindastheteleological‘reference’ofequipmenttothe‘towards-which’ofits‘serviceability’,theverypointfromwhichtheanalysisofequipmentbegan.(p.40)
