TimehadlostallmeaningforHarryPotter.Hewasabouttolivethroughwhatwouldundoubtedlybe
thelongestmonthofhislife.Inonemonthhewouldbeseventeen.Itmightaswellbeonecentury
away,hethought.Normally,hespentthesummermarkingoffdaysonahomemadecalendar
countingdowntothefirstofSeptember,whenhewouldbeabletoreturntoHogwartsSchoolof
WitchcraftandWizardry,butnowhehadanearergoal,which,inspiteofthat,seemedfarmore
elusivethanhisreturntoschoolusuallydid.
Althoughnon-magicteenagersmightnormallybecountingdowntotheirseventeenthbirthdays
becauseitwouldmeantheopportunitytofinallyhaveadriver’slicense,Harrywascountingdown
tothisdaybecausehewouldbeofageinthewizardingworld.Hewouldnolongerhavetoworry
aboutavoidingdoingmagicoutsideofschool.HecouldbeginlearningtoApparate.Hecouldeven
votefortheMinisterofMagic,ifavotewasheld.(Therehadn’tbeenavoteinthelastsixteenyears,
asfarasheknew.Harryalmostwishedtherewouldatleastbeavoteofno-confidence,buthe
wasn’tsurewhatthepointwouldbe,astheonlypersonpeoplewantedtobeMinister,otherthan
Fudge,wasAlbusDumbledore,whopreferredtobetheheadmasterofHogwarts.)Rightbeforehis

Naturally,havingallofthesethingstolookforwardtomeantthateachtwenty-four-hourdayfelt
moreliketwenty-fouryears.Intheshorttimehe’dbeenhomehethoughthewouldgomadfrom
thewaiting.Plus,inadditiontotheusualdailyverbalabusehehadtotoleratefromhisauntand
uncle(andtheirannoyinglittleYorkshireterrier,Dunkirk,whohatedHarrywithapassion)wasthe
factthattheyhaddecidedtousethelastmonthofhistenurewiththemtosqueezeasmuchfree
laboroutofhimaspossible.Ithadbegunonhisthirdmorningbackfromschool.
Harryhadrisenearlytogorunningasusual,havingdashedoutofthehousejustclearofthe
snappingjawsofthehighly-annoyedterrier.Whilehemadeacircuitaroundthepark,henoticed
withinterestthattherewasalargetenterectedinthemiddleofthegreen,neartheartificiallake
thatwascreatedwithfundsraisedbytheRoyalGardeningSocietyofLittleWhinging,ofwhichhis
auntwasrecordingsecretary(she’dbeenanglingforpresidentforyears,withnoluck,asAgnes
Bringhurstkeptsuccessfullycampaigningagainsther).Thetentwasverylargeandwhite,with
mesh“windows”givingonetheimpressionthatyoucouldputyourhandsthroughtheopenings.
WhenHarrypeeredthroughoneofthese,hesawtwomeninjumpsuitssettingupwhitefolding
chairsinneatrowswithanaisledownthecentre.Thechairsfacedadaiswithahandfulofchairs
lookingbackattheaudience.Thedaiswasskirtedinwhite,sothesupportsweren’tvisible.
Mustbeawedding,hedecided.ItwastheendofJune,afterall.Helookedupattheblue
cloudlesssky.Theweddingpartywasovercompensatingfortheweather;iftheyhadthoughtthat
they’dguaranteeclearskiesbyorderingatent,itseemedtohaveworked. (Althoughhisaunt

convincedthatcarryinganumbrellawasafool-proofcharmagainstrain.Harryknewthatthey

almostallthetimeanditrainedquitealot.)
Harryturnedawayfromthetentandimmediatelycollidedwithaveryfamiliarpersonwhowas
pantingheavily.Hehadn’trealizedthispersonhadwalkedrightuptothetentandwasalsopeering
inthemeshwindow.Harryfrowned.HehadlastseenhimontheplatformatKing’sCross,andhad
notbeenlookingforwardtoseeinghimagainsosoon.
“Howconsiderate–”wheeze!“–ofyoutoletmeknow–”gasp!“–youweregoingrunning,Potter–”
gulp!“–andtoletmehareafteryou–”pant!“–foramilewhileyouwenton,oblivious–”
Harryfrowned.“Ididn’tknowyouwerebehindme,Malfoy,elseI’dhavestopped.”Hewouldn’t

NowHarrygrinned.“Chinup,Malfoy.Stiffupperlipandallthat.Afterall,yougettolivewithall
thoselovelykitties....”hetaunted,knowinghowMalfoydetested–indeed,feared–catsofallkinds.
MalfoylungedforhimandHarryhoppednimblyoutoftheway,startingtojoginplace.“Come
on.Wecanrunbacktogether,ifyoulike.IcandropinandsayhellotoMrs.Figg.She’snotallthat
bad.Evenwhenshesnaps,she’snotasbadasmyaunt.She’sjustabitlike–”

Harryconsidered.“Well–shedoesn’thaveamagiceye.That’ssomething.You’dnevergetany
privacyifshedid.”
Malfoyshuddered.“Okay,nowI’mgoingtohavetogetthatimageoutofmymind...”
HarrystartedrunningbacktowardPrivetDrive,laughing,buttemperinghispaceuntiltheother
boyhadcaughtupwithhim.Astheyjogged,Harrysaid,“So.Iguesswe’dbettergobacktofirst
names.Forthesummer.”
Hereceivedanodinreturn,asDracowasturningquiteredanddrippingwithsweat.Whenthey
reachedMrs.Figg’shouse,theybothcollapsedonthelawnanddidsomewarm-downexercises
beforegoingroundthebacktoenterthroughthekitchendoor.Mrs.Figghadgoneoutearly,
leavinganote,soHarrybadeDracoMalfoyfarewellandreturnedtotheDursleys’toshowerand
eatbreakfast.
Whenheenteredthekitchen,hisauntwasdishingupkippersforhisuncle,andthedogwas
sittinginDudley’soldspotatthetable,waitingforhisownkipperswithearsstandingatattention
andhisfrontpawsontheedgeofthetable.Itwouldhavebeencuteifithadn’tbeenDunkirk,the
houndfromhell.Harrywenttothefridgeforsomeorangejuice,bumpinghisheadpainfullyonthe
topoftheopeningwhenhisauntscreechedathim.
“You!YougotacallfromthatDick.Wantsyoutoworkforhimagain.”
HarryhadbeenexpectingDickAbernathytocall,whowasreallyAberforthDumbledore,his
headmaster’sbrother.AbernathyLandscapingwasathrivingbusinesswhichalsoemployedthe
wizardSamBell,whohadservedtenyearsinAzkabanforcastingaspellwhichcausedhiswife’s
death.SamwasKatieBell’sdad;HarryhadplayedontheGryffindorQuidditchteamwithKatiefor
sixyears,butnowshewasoutofschool.HelikedSamandlookedforwardtoseeinghimagain.
VernonDursleyputdownhisnewspaperandlookedatHarrywithnarrowedeyes.“Oh,noyou
don’t.You’renotspendingyourlastmonthhereworkingforsomeoneelseandmakingmoneyhand
overfist.You’regoingtomakeupforallthoseyearsoffreeroomandboard,youare.Youwillmake
yourselfuseful.Startingtomorrow,whenyougoforthatmorningrunofyours,you’regoingtotake
Dunkirkwithyou.Heneedsmoreexercise.You’llwalkhimintheeveningaswell.Andyou’regoing
toreplacetheroof.Needsitbadly.Lasttimeitrained,itleakedrightoverourbed,andinouren
suitebath,andoverDudley’sdeskandintheguestroomaswell.Yourroomseemstobetheonly

Harrydroppedhisjaw.“IspentmostoflastsummeratMrs.Figg’s,soIhaven’tevensetfootin

HarrytalkedwithAberforthonthephoneaftereatinglunch;thenextmorninghewastobeatMrs.
Figg’sateighto’clocksharpforSamtodrivehimandDracototheestatewherethey’dplantedthe
treesduringtheprevioussummer.Theyweredoingmoreelaboratelandscapingonthegrounds,
buildingagardenfollytolooklikeaGreektempleandputtinginalotofshrubberywhichwould
thenbecarefullysculpted.Harrywaslookingforwardtothejob.Hespentthedayalternately
sunninghimselfinthegardenand,whenhegrewbored,hepulledsomeweedsorprunedsome
rosesandmadeamentalnotethatthebenchneededacoatofpaint.Andthenherememberedthat
inthefussovertheroof,hehadn’thadachancetoregisterhisdispleasurewiththeordertotake
Dunkirkonwalks.Asifthatdogwoulddoanythinghewantedhimto!Hewonderedwhetherthe
realgoalallalonghadbeentoturnhimintoDunkirk’swalker,andtheroofwasjustadiversion.
Whenhewentindoorstomakeasandwichforlunch,heheardvoicescomingfromtheupstairs.
OnewashisAuntPetunia,buthewasn’tsureabouttheother,asitwasmuffled.Hewalkedinto
thefronthall,unsurewhathewouldfind,andwasstartledwhenhisunclesuddenlycamejogging
downthestairs,anunnaturallyhappygrinonhisfaceandaGrunningsdrillinonehand.Upon
seeingHarry,heturnedhissmileonhim,andHarryfoughttheurgetorecoil.
“Hello,there!Juststoppinghomebriefly.It’ssoconvenienttoworkforacompanythatproduces
suchexcellentdrills!Mustgetbacktotheofficenow!”Andthenhewasgone;hestrodeoutside
andthroughtheglassinthedoorHarrysawhimgetintohiscar.Hehadtakenthedrillwithhim.
Itlookedlikeaverylargedrill,andHarryhadnoticedthatthebitwasalsoverylarge,capableof
boringaholeatleastaninchindiameter.
Heturned,startledagain,whenhisauntcamedownthestairs.Shewasbrushingwhatlooked
likewhitepowderfromherclothes.Whenshesawhim,shelookedevenmoresmugthanhisuncle.
Shepassedhimwithoutawordandwenttothekitchen.Harryshookhishead;hejustcouldnot
waitforthedayhedidn’thavetolivewithtwosuchmentalpeopleanymore.Hisbriefboutof
missingSurreywasveryeffectivelycured.
Afterheatehislunch,hedecidedtogotoMrs.Figg’s.Hehadbeenputtingitoff,butthere
wasnodenyingthatDracoMalfoyneededtoknowabouttheObedienceCharmVoldemorthadput
onhimwhenhewasababy.He’dbeendistractedbythetentintheparkandhadnotthoughtto
