Harryhadplannedtosleeplateonhisfirstdayofsummervacation.Hefeltasifheneededtosleep
forayearafterwhathe’dbeenthroughduringhisfourthyearofwizardingtraining.HarryPotter
waspossiblythemostfamouswizardintheworld,apartfromthedarkwizardwhohadkilledhis
parents.Andnowhewasprobablyevenmorefamous,havingwontheTriwizardTournamentjust
acoupleofweeksago.Buthewasonlyfamousinthewizardingworld;inthenon-magical,Muggle
world,hewasjustanannoyancetohisauntanduncleandcousin.Hejustwantedtosleeplate
andtrytoforgeteverythingthathadhappenedtohimduringtheprevioustenmonths.
Butinstead,heawokeatseven-thirtyinthemorningtotheshoutsofworkmen,thesquealand
grindingofabackhoe,andtheshrillvoiceofhisauntshoutinginstructionstotheworkerswhohad
beenhiredtorelandscapethegardenatFourPrivetDrive,whereHarryfeltaboutaswelcomeas
anarsonistinapaperfactory.Itwasimpossibletocontinuetosleepwithalltheracket,soHarry
resignedhimselftoitandthrewbackthesheet,sittingontheedgeofthebedandfumblingonhis
bedsidetableforhisglasses.Theroomcameintofocusnow,litteredwithwizardingparaphernalia
thatwasspillingoutofhistrunk,whichhehadnotproperlyunpackedyet.Herosetowalktothe
wardrobeandstoodlookingathisreflectioninthemirrorontheinsideofthedoor.
Hehadgrownseveralinchesduringthepreviousyear,andthebottomsofhispajamapants
hoveredaroundhisshins.He’dbeensobusyjusttryingtostayalivethroughtheTriwizardTour-
namentthathehadn’tevennoticedthathenowhadafull-blownAdam’sapple.Hetriedtosing
alittleofhisschool’ssong,toseehowhisvoicesounded.Traditionally,atHogwart’sSchoolof
WitchcraftandWizardry,everyonesangtheschoolsongtoadifferenttune.HewaspartialtoLoch
Lomondandstartedsinging,“I’lltakethehighroadandyou’lltakethelowroad....”butitcameout
soundingratherlikeacrossbetweenagardengnomebeingsatonbyadragonandarabidcatbeing
kickedabout.Heclearedhisthroatandtriedagain,managingthistimetoproducearecognizable
tuneinareedytenor,causinghimtobeoptimistic,buthalfwaythroughthefirstverse,hisvoice
crackedandmadeanoisethatwassostartlingthathissnowyowlHedwigsquawkedinhercage
andflappedherwingsagitatedly.
Therewasasuddensilenceinthegarden,andoneoftheworkmenyelled,“Whatinthehellwas
that?”HarryhadhopedthattheworkerwasreferringtoHedwig,andnottohim,butasecond
workernowreplied,“Cor,Dick,Ithinkitwassomeonesinging.”Harrygrimacedintothemirror;
hedecidedtodropthevoiceexperimentsfornowandlifteduphishair,examiningthelightening-
shapedscaronhisforehead,amarkhe’dreceivedasababyonthenightVoldemortkilledhis
parents,andattemptedtokillhim.Heletthehairflopbackontohisface.Heneededahaircut.
Whenhewasyounger,he’dalwaysfoughtagainsthaircuts(hisauntandunclewereendlessly
frustratedbyhishair),butnowhewasthinkingheneededsomethingthatmadehimlookabitless
likeascaredlittlekid(asthoughitwerestandingonendbecausehewasafraid)andalotmorelike
awizardthatapowerfulDarkLordhadtotakeseriously.
Healsonoticedthattherewasadark,downyhazestartingtoappearonhischinandupperlip
andalonghisjawline.Facialhair!Atlast!Maybehewouldbeshavingbeforethesummerwas
over;hewonderedwhethertherewerespecialcharmedrazorsthatwouldn’tevercutaperson’s
skinwhileshaving.Therehadtobesomething;he’dnevernoticedasinglewizardwalkingabout
withlittletuftsoftoiletpaperstucktotheshavingcutsonhisface,likehisUncleVernondidevery
morning.Sometimestheyfelloffhisfaceatthebreakfasttableanddroppedintohiscoffeeorhis
food;Harryneversaidanythingwhenthishappened,tryingnottogrinbroadlyashewatchedhis
detesteduncleeataspoonfulofeggsprominentlyadornedwithawadofbloodypaper,whichhis
uncledidnotnoticewhenhisfacewasburiedinthemorningnews.Attimeslikethishewould
invariablysaytoHarry’sAuntPetunia,“Petunia!Whathaveyouputintheeggsthismorning!
They’resmashing!”Andhisauntwouldlookself-satisfiedandsmug,launchingintoadiscourse

aboutafamouschefshe’dseendemonstratingrecipesonachatshow.Harrywouldhavetodrop
hisforkandputhisheadunderthetabletoavoidthemseeingthegleefullookonhisface,andonce
healmostchokedonhisorangejuice,tryingnottolaugh.
Thefacialhairwasnowherenearreadytobeshaven,though.Itlookedmorelikehehadn’t
properlywashedhisfaceandadirtyfilmwerestillonhisskin.Helookedathischestinthemirror;
heneversleptwithashirtonanymore;somehowhehaddevelopedaphobiaaboutbeingstrangled
inhissleep,andthecollarsofevenV-neckedshirtsmadehimfeellikehisairwasbeingblocked.
Hischestwaspaleandflatandhairless,hewasstillsothinthathisribsshowedbeneaththe
skim-milkskin.Hetriedflexinghismuscles;heturnedhisheadtolookinthemirror.Ludicrous.
Inamonthhewouldbefifteen,andhehadnomusclestoflex.
ThenheloweredhisarmsandexaminedtheotherVoldemort-relatedscarhebore;thecuton
theinsideofhisrightelbowwhereWormtailhadtakenhisbloodtoaddtothecauldronwherehe
wasbrewingthepotionthatwouldresurrectLordVoldemort.Hisblood–thebloodofafoe–wasthe
finalingredientneededforVoldemorttogethisbodyback,afterbonesfromhisfather’sgraveand
fleshfromaservant(Wormtailhadcutoffhisownhandandhadbeenrewardedwithanewsilver
one).
Harryshookhimselftoclearhishead,toridhimselfofthehorrificimageofWormtailwrithing
ontheground,holdinghisbloodystumpofanarm...
Theworkmenhadstartedupagain,yellingtoeachother,and,likeadescantabovetheirchorus,
hisauntharanguedthemaboutthewaytheyweredoingthework.Hisuncle’sdrillplantwasdoing
verywell,andhehadtoldAuntPetuniathatshecouldhavethegardenredesignedsothatshecould
impresshergardenclub.Shehadhiredagardendesigner,whoseplantheworkmenwerefollowing,
butnowshewasspendingallofhertimechanginghermindabouteverydetailatthelastpossible
momentanddrivingeveryonecrazywiththeresultingchaos.
HarryputonsomeshortsandaT-shirt,pulledonhissocksandsneakersandwentoutthedoor
afterslippingHedwiganowltreat.Inthekitchen,hisunclewasreadingthemorningpaperand
preparingtobitedownonabitofbaconthathadtherequisitebloodypapersittingontheparthe
wasabouttoputinhismouth.Harrystifledalaughandthrusthisheadintotherefrigeratorto
lookforfood,sonoonecouldseehisexpression.
Harrysatdownatthetablewithsomeorangejuiceandabananahepickedoutofabowlon
thecounter,thentookapieceofbutteredtoastfromaplateonthetable.HiscousinDudleywas
sittingatthetablealready,almostdonehisfrugalbreakfastofyogurtandfruitandaricecake.
He’dbeenupgradedfromgrapefruitbecausehe’dactuallybeenprettygoodatstickingtohisdiet
atschoolthepreviousyear.ToHarry’seyeshedidlooknoticeablysmaller,evenalittlemuscular,
ratherthanlikeamoundofquiveringblancmange.SinceHarryhadbeenhome,Dudleyhadeven
beenreasonablyciviltohim,helpinghimcarryhistrunkuptohisroomfromthecar,andbragging
aboutalltheweighthe’dlost.Hedidn’taskHarryanythingabouthowhisschoolyearwas;just
prattledonaboutthisgirlhewantedtoaskoutinSeptember,gushingonaboutJuliathisandJulia
that.Harrylistenedpatiently;hewasn’tallowedtousemagicoutsideofschool,andthat’stheonly
thingthatprobablywouldhavemadeDudleyshutup.Besides,hewouldratherlistentoDudley
blitherabouthisgirlfriendthanbeonthereceivingendofapoundingfromhim,ashappenedall
toooftenduringhisearlychildhood.
Hisauntfinallysatdowntoeatherbreakfast,havinglefttheworkersinthegardenalonefor
themoment.Butthepeaceofthebreakfasttablewassuddenlyshatteredbyalargebarnowlthat
cameflappingintheopenwindow.ItlandedonVernonDursley’schairandproddedhimtotake
twoparchmentsfromherrightleg,thenturnedaneyeontherestofhisbacon.Annoyed,hisuncle
gotupandbackedawayfromthelargebirdofprey,yelling,“Harry!Whatdoesitwant?”
Sighingathisuncle’smagic-phobia,Harrywenttotheowlandremovedtheparchments,surrep-
titiouslyslippingtheowlsomebaconashedidso.Helookedattheparchments;onewasaddressed
tohisauntanduncleandseemedtobeinhisgodfather’shandwriting,andtheotherwasaddressed
tohim,onofficialHogwartsstationery.Theowlhooted.Havingsuccessfullyperformedherduty
andreceivingnoinstructionstowaitforareplytobedrafted,sheflewbackouttheopenwindow.
Harryheardtheworkersoutsideyellinsurprise,asherealizedthey’ddonewhenshe’darrived,but
hewastoopreoccupiedtonoticebefore.
Hehandedhisuncletheletterfromhisgodfather,SiriusBlack,whowasafugitivefromjustice
inthewizardingworldbecausehisformerfriend,PeterPettigrew(thesilver-handedservantof
VoldemortknownasWormtail)hadsuccessfullyframedhimforhisownmurderandthemurders
ofastreetfullofMuggles(non-magicalpeople).Eversincehehadtoldhisauntandunclethathe
hadafugitivewizardforagodfather,theDursleyshadtreatedhimslightlybetter.
Hisuncleopenedtheletterandreadwithanexpressionthatstartedoutasannoyance(time

surprisedandevenfrightened.HarryhadnotopenedhisHogwartsletteryet;hewonderedwhat
Siriuscouldhavewrittenthatwouldmakehisunclerespondthisway.UncleVernonthrustthe
letteratHarry,seemingtobecautiousabouttouchinghim,asthoughhewereafraidthatHarry
coulddomagiconcontact.Harryreadtheletter.

IamwritingtoyoubecauseIamconcernedaboutHarry.IwishIcouldhavehimwithme
andlookafterhimmyself,butasyouknow,mylegalstatusinthewizardingcommunity
makesthatimpossible;evenifIcontinuetosuccessfullyeludetheauthorities,travelingwith
themostfamousyoungwizardintheworldwillmakemeappearsomewhatconspicuous,
andwilldonothingtoenhanceHarry’ssafety.TheheadmasterofHogwartsfeelsthatheis
safestwithyouforthesummer,butIwanttocautionyounottomakelifeundulystressful
forhim,ashehasexperiencedaninordinateamountofstressthisyear.
Harrymaynothavetoldyouaboutthis,becauseheisverymodest,butheisthewinner
oftheTriwizardTournamentthatwasheldathisschoolthisyearforthefirsttimeinover
acentury,andheistheyoungestwinnerever.Anotherreasonhemaynottellyouthisis
notmodesty,however,butbecausehedoesnotwishtorememberwhatoccurredattheend
oftheTournament,whenhewastransportedtoaplacewherethesamedarkwizardwho
betrayedhisparentswaspreparingtoresurrecttheDarkLordwhoactuallykilledthem.
Harryexperiencedhorriblethingsthatday,includingseeingafellowschoolmatekilled
beforehisveryeyes.HedueledwithLordVoldemorthimselfandescapedwithhislife,
returningwithhisschoolmate’sbodysothathisparentscouldmournoverhimandgive
himaproperburial.Hedidmorethanmanyadultwizardscouldhave–orwouldhave–
done,andhasmademeveryproudofhim,forhismoralstrengthandintegrityasmuchas
hismagicalability.AllsignspointtoHarryonedaybeingaverypowerfulandformidable
wizard.Pleasetreathimwell–hewon’tbeinschoolforever.
IwillcometoaccompanyHarrytodohisschoolshoppingneartheendofthesummer,
andtodeliverhimtotheschooltrainonSeptemberthefirst.

Hisunclelookedathimthroughnarrowedeyes.“Andjusthowexactlywouldeveryonerecognize
youasbeingthefamousHarryPotter?”Harrydrewhislipsintoastraightlineandliftedhishair
fromhisforeheadtorevealhisscar.Vernondrewhisownlipsintoastraightlineandmuttered,
“Oh,right.”Hesatdowninhischairagain,nowthattheowlwasnolongersittingonit,andsneered
atHarry,“So!You’rethehotshottournamentwinner!Youmustthinkyou’reGod’sgifttomagic!”
Harrywassurprised;normally,hisuncleavoidedtheMword.Butthen,heshouldn’tbesurprised
thathisunclewastryingtoneedlehim.Itwasasthoughhehadn’treadthepartsoftheletter
aboutmodestyandtryingtoforgetaboutCedric...
CedricDiggoryhadbeentheotherHogwartschampion,TheRealHogwartsChampion,pro-
claimedbuttonsthatsomeofthestudentshadworntheyearbefore,buttonsthat,whenpressed,
proclaimed

inbiliousgreenlettersthatweresupposedtobereminiscentofhis
eyes(whichweremorelikeemeralds).HeandDiggoryhadgoneintothefinalroundofthetour-
namenttiedforfirstplace.IthadbeensorecentthatHarrycouldstillfeeltheweightofCedric’s
lifelessbody,couldstillseethestaringexpressiononhisfrozenface,theblueeyesforevervacant
andunseeing...
Harrygrimacedathisunclebutdidn’tdaresayanything;hewasbitingbackruderesponses
thatcouldmeanhisbeingimprisonedinhisroomforthesummerwithhismagicsupplieslockedin
thecupboardunderthestairsagain.Justbecausehisunclewasfullofhimselfandnevermissed
anopportunitytobrag,hethoughteveryonewasthatway.HarrysawthatDudleywasactually
lookingathimwithsomethinglikegrudgingrespect.
“Well!”hisunclesaidatlast.“JuststayoutofmywaythissummerisallIask!”Hethrustthe
letterathiswifeandleftforwork,justshortofhavingsteamcomingoutofhisears,asthough
hehaddecidedafteralltotakeSirius’adviceandhadbeenbitingbacksomechoicewordsofhis
own.Dudleymanagedtogettheletterfromhismother,whohadgonetotheopenwindowtoyell
somethingtotheworkersagain.
